10 Charter Schools in the UAE: What Makes Them Stand Out

Charter schools are Abu Dhabi's third school model, alongside public and private schools. Here are ten of them, with location, fees, admission and key facts for each.

Fees

These American-curriculum charter schools are free of cost, and neither public nor private.

• No tuition at any of the ten schools

• Funded by the government and run by private operators

• each school have different uniforms, transport or activity costs.

Admission

Your child must be one of these:

• A UAE national

• A child of a UAE national mother

• A GCC citizen (Grade 1 and above only)

• A holder of a citizenship decree

Documents needed:

• Proof of Abu Dhabi residence

• Student's and parent's Emirates IDs

• Birth certificate

• Completed registration form

• Transfer or attested certificates, if moving schools

• Supporting documents if the parent is not the father

• A separate registration form for students of determination

Points to know:

• The child must meet the minimum age for the grade, which is published each registration cycle

• Places are tied to your neighbourhood

• Expatriate families aren't eligible

• Register online through the Charter Schools Abu Dhabi website

• The network currently offers kindergarten and Cycles 1, 2 and 3

The Ten Schools

1. Al Rayana School

1. Location: Al Falah, Abu Dhabi

2. Operator: Aldar Education

3. Grades: Kindergarten and elementary

4. Students: Fully inclusive, open to all learners in its community

Good to know:

• It is the founding charter school of the UAE, opened as ADEK's pilot in 2018
• Its motto is "Growing Hearts and Minds Together"
• Its values are unity, diversity and tolerance, excellence and pride, and determination and resilience
• It focuses on science, technology, engineering and maths, using inquiry-based learning
• Reading programmes include Daily 5 English language arts sessions and a Tuck in Tuesday at-home reading scheme
• Early admissions guidance limited places to families in certain zones of Al Falah (2019 information, so check current rules)

2. Sir Bani Yas School

1. Location: Al Danah, Abu Dhabi

Good to know:

• It is also spelled "Seer Bani Yas" in some sources
• It was reported among the seven new charter schools opening in one intake, alongside Al Bayan, Atfal Al Emarat, Al Hosoon, Mubarak Bin Mohammed, Al Ghaf and Al Qeyam
• grade range- specifically serves 6th and 7th 

3. Al Qurm School

1. Location: 32nd Street, Mohamed Bin Zayed City

2. Operator: Aldar Education

3. Curriculum: American

Good to know:

• Its mission is Excite, Challenge, Empower
• Its values are excellence, integrity, passion, respect and collaboration
• Project-based subjects range from learning about Formula 1 to making the school more sustainable
• It puts students first, listing them ahead of teachers and parents in its ethos

4. Jabel Hafeet School

1. Location: Al Ain

2. Grades: KG and Cycle 1

3. Students: Boys and girls

4. Size:

   • Planned for 1,490 students (1,250 Cycle 1 and 240 KG)

   • Built on a 38,422 sq m plot

   • Construction cost Dh118 million

Good to know:

• Its values are Challenge, Curiosity and Caring
• Everyone follows a set of expectations called SAFE
• It stresses Emirati culture and national identity
• ADEK chose it to pilot AI "smart school" technology with SenseTime
• Size figures come from original plans, so confirm current numbers

5. Maryam Bint Omran School

1. Location: Bani Yas, Abu Dhabi

2. Operator: New Century Education

3. Grades: G6–G7 and G10–G12

4. Students: Girls only

Good to know:

• Its operator says its principals are experienced Emirati educational leaders
• New Century Education also runs Al Bayan, Al Bayraq, Al Dhaher, Al Hosoon, Al Mutanabi, Al Nahdha and Jern Yafoor

6. Mubarak Bin Mohammed School

1. Location: Al Manhal, Abu Dhabi

2. Grades: Two campuses, with a separate Cycle 2 campus listed by ADEK

Good to know:

• Its vision is "Nurturing Today's Children, Inspiring Tomorrow's Leaders"
• It opened as a charter school in the same intake as Sir Bani Yas and Al Ghaf
• It has mirrored wings to efficiently separate student facilities, deep glass facades, sensory gardens, and landscaped learning plazas 

7. Abdulla Bin Otaiba School

1. Location: 1350 Avenue, Mohamed Bin Zayed City, Abu Dhabi

2. Operator: Aldar Education

3. Curriculum: American

4. Size: Nearly 1,500 students

5. Students: 100% Emirati, mostly second-language English learners

Good to know:

• It became a charter school in August 2019
• It uses personalised learning software for maths, reading and language arts
• The government's school directory lists it as a charter school, with no Irtiqaa inspection rating applicable

8. Al Mutanabi School

1. Location: Bani Yas, Abu Dhabi

2. Operator: New Century Education

3. Grades: G9–G12

4. Students: Boys only

Good to know:

• It is one of the few charter schools here focused on the upper grades

9. Al Riyadh School

1. Address- 25 Al Asmaʻi St, Madinat Al Riyad (RD33), Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. 

2. Grades: KG1 to Grade 8, with plans to grow to Grade 12

3. Curriculum: American (NY Standards)

4. Size: Over 3,500 students on a purpose-built campus

Good to know:

• parents on ADEK's site says their kids performance improved greatly and describes the teachers as caring
• It is one of ten charter schools Taaleem runs, including Al Qeyam, Al Salam, Al Azm, Al Ahd and Al Watan
• Taaleem began with four schools in 2019, rising to nine by 2022

10. Al Ghaf School

1. Location: Al Khibeesi, Abu Dhabi

Good to know:

• It opened in the same intake as Sir Bani Yas, Mubarak Bin Mohammed and Al Qeyam
• National Curriculum for England (British curriculum) blended with the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). 
• Grade Levels: Foundation Stage up to Year 8 (serving students aged 3 to 18 broadly, depending on current phase expansion).
